My artistic background

photo VD 2.jpg

Rich in dual training as an engineer and a painter, I have always found the time to practice my great passion, painting.

In parallel with my scientific studies, I took courses at the Paris City School of Fine Arts in the early 1980s.

I practiced drawing from live models and painting in oils a lot.
A few years earlier, in high school, I had for three years as a plastic art teacher, Mr. Claude Troger, an extraordinary person. He knew everything about drawing and perspective and has written
a book on this subject .

My first individual exhibition dates from 1993. On this occasion I met the great artist Jacques Ousson with whom I then often worked, in his studio and on the banks of the Loire.

Jacques introduced me to the subtle technique of pastel, of which he is one of the best specialists in France.

Gradually mastering this art, I made many pastels on order representing the beautiful homes of my customers.

At the end of the 90s I took part in several exhibitions in the province and in the Paris region. I have been lucky enough to win several awards.

My style and the themes I have dealt with have often evolved. After a figurative period where I liked to represent harbours and sailboats, I started to simplify the forms to paint more and more abstract paintings. I looked for balances and harmonies between very simple colored shapes, like a composer playing with simple musical notes. The theme of music has inspired me in several paintings.

My missions as an engineer also made me travel a lot, for exemple to Peking where I lived from 2003 to 2005. My paintings of that time are rich in Chinese influence.

Back in France, I received several orders on the theme of cities: Bordeaux, Marseille, Perpignan, London ... My clients liked that I paint, in my own way, the cities that were dear to them.

In 2017, I opened a workshop where I received students several times a week, most of them were beginners. Passing on my experience and knowledge to them was a great pleasure. We mostly painted landscapes of Paris. I made several myself, which my students often bought.

At the start of 2021, I set myself a new challenge, to exhibit again, but in Paris this time.

It will be with my great friend Claude Hartmann whose work I admire. In particular his way of treating light in landscapes as varied as Greece or Brittany.

Thanks to him we found a small gallery in Bastille which will host us the second half of December.

In the light - which is our common theme - I add for my part, on my paintings, numbers, figures, equations ... my engineering side has not disappeared!

But nothing academic here! My paintings represent the 1001 nights, the 4 seasons, the golden ratio, the 4th dimension, the 7 wonders of the world ...

Numbers and mathematics are everywhere when you think about it and they have one essential point in common with painting: harmony.

Claude and I are therefore expecting many of you at our exhibition.
